Flavor #16 - What's Your Flavor?

What's Your Flavor? Campaign

Dear family and friends,

Today marks 31 days until I turn 32. I can't believe that my 31 Flavors project is almost over. It's been one of the most interesting, frustrating, rewarding, years of my life, and I'm so grateful to all of you who have supported me in all of my quirky ventures.

Though I'm a tad behind in my writing, I'm actually pretty close to finishing. To date I've completed 18 flavors and I'm in the process of completing 6 more. That leaves 7 other flavors to accomplish in 31 days, and I'm determined to make it happen.

Even if I don't quite make it, this year has changed my life forever. Now, juggling lessons may not seem like life-changing material, but it's small triumphs like that, that have taught me that unexpected things are possible, and that it's never too late to explore knew things.

The fact that I had people like you choose most of those learning experiences for me, forced me to step outside of my boundaries and see things from another point of view. Because of you, I've found joy in things that I never expected...and harsh confirmation that I'm truly not meant to do other things...like unicycling.

Learning truly is living, and in the spirit of never being too settled or too timid to try something new, for my 16th flavor I'd like to give you a tiny lick of what I've been experiencing over the past 11 months...

In the next 31 days, I challenge you to accomplish a flavor of your own, and enter your flavor in my "What's Your Flavor" campaign. I'll review all of the submissions and decide which flavor is the most amusing, inspiring, etc. The winner will receive a $31 Baskin Robbins gift certificate from yours truly.

To enter leave a comment on this posting "Flavor #16 - What's Your Flavor" with your name and a short summary of the new flavor you tried.

The deadline is my birthday, JUNE 11, 2010.

Much love and thanks to you all!

Kelsey

This new flavor has been a long time in the running, but in the next 31 days I will graduate medical school and move to San Francisco to start my residency (with a new "MD" after my name)!!

Your "twin",

PS-It's been so fun to keep up with your blog. I really admire you for it. Here's to a new year for both of us! Miss you!

Kelsina,
I LOOOOOOVVVEEEEEE your blog!!!!! You are such an excellent writer! I hope you make a book out of this project someday! (another flavor to add?) Anyway, thanks for a good challenge--especially on a morning in which exercise has felt like "what's the point" among other duties before moving from beloved Houston. I'll be heading to El Paso on May 20th (then to Minnesota at the end of June), and I have barely started making the transition in my mind, let alone in my apartment. Lots still to do! Anyway, best wishes for your final month of 31 flavors!!!! Enjoy the rest of this enlightening ride!
Big hugs,
Cathy

Miss Kelsey! I want to do this, however, I think it's only fair in the spirit of things that you suggest a flavor for me since we all had to suggest a flavor for you. I've already tried to step out of my boundaries a lot this year- I'm training to run a 10k at the end of this month (me who couldn't run a mile a year ago will be running 6 lol), I just passed the English PLACE exam so that I am now dual certified to teach social studies and english and am working on getting a teaching job so that I can finally do what I want to be doing. Now with that said you and I both know I'm not the most creative person so I would like you to pick one for me. I don't have to be in the contest, lord knows I don't need the ice cream with as hard as I'm working to undo the damage all the ice cream of the past has done- I just want to do this for me. So if you have a moment and something comes up that makes you think of me I would love the suggestion. I miss you terribly and am so proud of you for all that you've done over the last year. I hope I'll get to see you soon.
Love you!

Natalie

Now, I don’t know if this’ll actually count ‘cuz it was already planned before the challenge was issued but my Flavor Submission is: Expand the list of States I’ve visited and get a better, hands-on understanding of the amazing diversities and beauty the United States have to offer.

For as long as I can remember, “What’s your Dream Vacation?” has been a frequent topic of idle conversations. People would throw out all sorts of exotic locations: Taiwan, Japan, Australia, Florence and, of course, Paris. However, for me, the answer has always been some sort of Road Trip here in the States.

Partially, it’s a symptom of my being too lazy to bother getting a passport... but mostly, North America is just such a beautiful continent! The range of differences in climate and wildlife and native foliage from one end to the other is astounding! And I think these sorts of things are best enjoyed at close range, and at speeds less than 600mph.

Along with a desire to visit all 50 states before I go the way of all the world, I’ve long harbored a dream to drive down the Pacific Coast, from Washington to California. This is the year that it will happen.

Around Memorial Day weekend, John and I are taking an Epic Road Trip. I will be adding Washington and Oregon to the States I’ve visited and we will drive from Seattle, WA to Berkeley, CA along coastal Highway 1. In addition to visiting a few cities, we’ll be taking our sweet time and exploring National Parks and other scenic places of interest that we find along the way. It’s going to be amazing.
I can hardly wait!!

ps. I love your blog! thanks for letting me participate!

I'm going to throw an epic party - and facilitate the meeting of a couple that will turn into marriage!

My flavor is learning how to swim - or, as one of my colleagues put it best, engaging in aversion therapy. With one of five private lessons completed to-date, I can say with certainty this is one of the most humbling experiences. Ever.

Hmmmm. Maybe you could try having a pet tarantuala. Is that a flavor? Seems like you're having quite the adventures, Kelsey. I love your writing. You're quite talented.

If you're going for ice cream flavors, try the "grandma's cake batter" Tillamook ice cream. It's addicting.

I went to Utah this last week and a half to visit one of my sisters. I lived in American Fork, Ut for 6 months when I was 20. Since then, I've visited a number of times. Not once have I gone up in the mountains- hiking, rock climbing or otherwise.

A couple days ago I finally went up into Provo canyon for some hiking on an evening that seemed to end too quickly. It was so awesome. I'm with Kate in my admiration of the beauty of this country. I'll speak for us both by adding especially being midwest girl with an awe I cannot shrug when I see the big, giant boulders up around SLC and Utah valley.

This is a really cool blog and a great idea. I love the pictures. You go girl. Lets get some ice cream for your birthday.

I was going to start trading on etsy... but I don't think I will get that flavour started in the allotted time. It might come the week after

Okay so here we go: for my flavor I did something I would like to call "A Taste of Utah"! For the first and most drastic step I died my reddish brunette hair a 'very much fake' blond. Step number two will consist of me poofing my hair according to true Utah standards and going to a shooting range next week end -which I consider just as much a waste of my time and God given resources as dying my hair blond. The third step, and I admit this may be the most daring of all, I will personally buy all ingredients and MAKE an original jello salad. I am still accepting favorite recipes from Grandmas, Aunts and Mother-In-Laws! :)
All jokes aside I have felt somewhat judgmental of our fake blond fellow females and will therefore attempt to walk a mile in their moccasins in order to deepen my charity and see what life is like as a sexy blond!!! :)
